New Time Suckers

I've been diligently trying to stick to a writing schedule for the last few weeks, and for the most part, I've done a good job. Until this week. Suddenly I have doctor appointments and medical tests galore! Nothing earth-shattering, just things that will require some time draining intervention. It seems like when I have an appointment, it burns up a big chunk of my day and I have to forgo part of my daily word count.
In addition, DD is out of school, not yet gone to camp. So she's begging for rides to the mall, to her friends' homes and the like. But there's light at the end of that tunnel - she leaves for camp for a week on Sunday!
We've been having problems with our router lately. Until our tech support (aka DH's best friend) returns from a business trip to fix it, we only have Internet on one computer, not mine. The silver lining there is that one particular time sucker is a little further removed. I have to get up from my desk and go to DH's to check email. I find that alone has boosted my word count! Problem is, I'm writing a story that requires lots of research, so every time I hit a wall, I have to get up and hope no one else is using that computer.
So what about you? What drains your time more than anything?

Well, first, doctor's appointments give me guilt-free reading time, so I don't really consider that too much of a problem. Of course, I'm not on deadline, either.

I would probably get more done if I didn't check email (or at least turned off the blinking icon that alerts me to one coming in).

My biggest time drain is just doing other stuff, whether it's paying bills, doing the shopping, or hitting blogs, checking Facebook.

I like to know I have a chunk of uninterrupted time, which is probably why I get so many more fresh words written in the evening.

Hang in there -- eventually the kids leave home, and then you have NO excuses for not getting your writing goals met.

It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who lets the internet drain away her writing time. Email and blog reading really do me in.

Though, I've been very firm and haven't allowed myself to join FB, MS or Twitter. That can come later.

There are lots of other things eating away my writing time, too. But I'll put on my big girl panties and take full responsibility. Even if I'd really like to blame it on sea monkeys. ;)

I totally know the frustration. I'm glad to be back online so I can focus again. Being without internet is definitely a tragedy for me since I'm so 'online dependent'.

*Hugs* Hope the tests are positive.

Gads, I hate the DR visit thing. It seems like no one's time is important as theirs, and you can sit and wait for hours before you get it for a a 20-sec visit then back out the door again. And the getting there, the parking, the checking out . . . you're right a total time suck, and it's distracting.

The double edged sword -- the internet. I feel completely disconnected when I can't click on the link button, but you're absolutely right about getting more done.

Hope the round of DR visits come to an end and there's peace while the kiddo is at camp.

Facebook. It's way too easy to get sucked into the drama of your friends and neglect the drama you're supposed to be creating for your characters!

The other major timesuck is trying to write at home. Every time I hit a sticking point, it's way too easy to look up and see a project. Then laundry leads to dishes leads to errands...you get my drift! ;-)
