So we're at my son's high school graduation ceremony last night and the parents acted worse than the kids! Almost 700 seniors graduating, a college arena, easily 3,000 people there and at least 10% of the guests were totally rude. The emcee and literally EVERY speaker asked people to remain quiet as each name was called so that the next name could be heard. Not only was this ignored, but people were blowing those can horns, hooting and hollering and acting like buffoons in public.
A guy behind me never shut his mouth the entire time! If he wasn't shouting something toward the stage, he was loudly conversing with the guy next to him. Now these were not 17 or 18 year olds. These were parents - most in their forties and up.
What is up with this? Are manners on the decline? Do you find rude people everywhere? I seem to be surrounded by them more and more. Could this be a trend, like rising gasoline prices? God, I hope not. What do you think?

I have a sneaking suspicion that some people go a little snakey when a child graduates from high school. It brings their own reality screeching to life in front of them - they are not 18 anymore even if that's what they feel like inside. I know both my parents acted totally out-of-character on the day of my graduation. I ended up feeling like the most mature person present. But then they got it all together again, so I chalked that up to 'this may one day happen to you so be kind'.
I know what you mean. One thing is to be proud of your kid. But sheesh... some parents behave rude thinking their kid is the ONLY one graduating.
I have a blog topic about rude people I planned to write soon too! I don't understand it.
I've grown into the type of person that has trouble in crowds just for that reason. And, how sad is this, I actually dread going to the movies because of people and their stupid cell phones!
Rude people suck.
Our newspaper just had a letter to the editor about another area HS graduation with the same complaint. According to my son, most of the grads were quite irritated by the noise.
