New Experiences

Today DH and I are attending a wedding reception - but not just any wedding reception. This will be a new experience for us. You see, this will be the first lesbian wedding reception we've ever been to.

I was at a loss about what sort of gift bag and card to buy, since it's not an actual legal wedding in this state, but I went ahead and got a traditional bag with wedding themes and a regular wedding card. Frankly, I think all this couple wants to do is be like any other couple, with one obvious exception. The weird thing is, the last time I went to a party hosted by "the bride," it was a housewarming for her and her then hubby. DH tells me we'll probably be the only straight couple there (she works with DH). And I'm okay with that - I think. You see, I'm a pretty liberal person with this sort of thing, but events such as this definitely push me to the limits of my comfort zone. I know I SHOULD be comfortable attending the party, but since it's a new thing for me, I hope I don't say the wrong thing. Maybe I'll just stick with the tried and true, "Mazel Tov!" What about you? Have you taken a stroll outside your comfort zone lately?

I haven't been to any same-sex weddings so far, but I have processed same-sex couples at the pension agency where I work. Whenever these documents slip out of the envelopes, I look at them in wonder, realizing I'm holding history in my hands. Here in Nova Scotia, Canada, gay and lesbian marriages are legal. I find it amazing and wonderful. I feel empowered just looking at their triumph.

I don't think there's any 'right' or 'wrong' thing to say other than congrats or like you said, 'Mazel Tov'! I'm a little late posting, so I hope you had a fantastic time at the party. IMHO, any occasion where you can drink champagne is all right in my book ;)

Julia - why does it always seem you guys north of the broder are so far ahead of the curve on stuff like this?
Katie - we had a good time. I got to meet lots of folks DH works with. Lots of ladies with short hair and sensible shoes, and plenty more I'd have never clocked. Just nice folks, good food, drinks and music.

Glad you had fun.

Short hair and sensible shoes? Sounds like me. Is that why my husband is always complaining? He wants me with long hair and stilettos.

LOL, Terry!

Couldn't resist, Dara. :-)

Mazel tov! is perfect. What more than heath and happiness could you wish a happy couple?

Dara, we have some very good Canadian friends who have marveled over the American willingness to accept hideous levels of violence as unremarkable, yet we freak out over anything having to do with sex. They're much more relaxed about sex and relationships and freaked out over violence. Maybe both cultures could use some adjusting?
